A new method for tooth anesthesia without needing to use a syringe

Recent researches seek to discover methods that do not need to use a syringe to numb the mouth. There is a new method that not only helps reduce the time and costs of dentists, but also reduces the anxiety of patients.

New findings by researchers at the University of Sao Paulo show that dentists may not need to use a syringe to inject anesthetic in the future. Instead, dentists can use a small electric current, saving time and money, and avoiding the fear and anxiety that patients usually have when injecting anesthesia. On the other hand, this method reduces the risk of confusion after the use of anesthetic and the transfer of contamination, and provides access to more effective and safer ways to treat patients in different parts of the world.

Usually, before injecting the anesthetic, dentists use local anesthetics to reduce the pain caused by the anesthetic injection. This process is time-consuming and causes unnecessary expenses. These local pain relievers mostly contain lidocaine and prilocaine, they are produced in the form of liquid gel, spray or ointment. The researchers sought to find a way to inject the anesthetic into the patient's body without the need for a needle.

Therefore, scientists decided to try a method called "Iontophoresis", a method in which medicinal compounds enter the body through the skin with the help of an electric current. Although this method has been successful in transferring drugs into biological membranes, its performance on mucous membranes has not yet been determined.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of "iontophoresis" on the mucosal absorption rate of prilocaine hydrochloride (PCL) and lidocaine hydrochloride (LCL), two common compounds that are widely used in dentistry. Scientists believe that the results of this research can be used in fields other than dentistry, for example, the treatment of cancer and skin and eye diseases.

To test this hypothesis, the researchers mixed the liquid anesthetic with a polymer to make it stick to the oral mucosa, then added prilocaine hydrochloride (PCL) and lidocaine hydrochloride (LCL). They tested the resulting compound in the mouth of a pig, and the results were interesting: iontophoresis made PLC enter the body more quickly and effectively, increasing its permeability through the oral mucosa by 12 times. . Using this method without a syringe increased the speed of development and survival of oral anesthesia.

As a result of this discovery, researchers are looking to design a device that can only be used orally to apply this anesthetic method.
